On 28 January 2019, IUPAC formally endorsed the Manifesto of the Chemistry GO FAIR Implementation Network (ChIN). This chemistry network is part of a larger global science network that supports the FAIR guiding principles for scientific data management and stewardship. Simply stated, the principles are that data must be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable and they “form the basis of a trusted environment where researchers, innovators, companies, and citizens can publish, find, and re-use each other’s data and tools for research, innovation, and educational purposes.”
IUPAC, in partnership with CODATA, will supply the governance framework specifically for ChIN and will continue the development of internationally-recognized standards in chemistry, including those for file formats and identifiers, and representations of molecules. IUPAC will also continue liaising and developing formal relationships with other organizations that are stakeholders in the area.
The IUPAC Committee on Publications and Cheminformatics Data Standards (CPCDS) was significantly involved in the preparation of the Manifesto and two CPCDS members, Dr. Stuart Chalk, University of North Florida (USA) and Prof. Jeremy Frey, University of Southampton (UK) serve as network representatives.
The broader GO Fair Initiative itself emerged from the European Open Science Cloud (ESOC) Declaration on Innovation and New Opportunities and, while European-based, the basic FAIR principles that it supports are being widely-embraced around the world across diverse disciplines.
