Prof. Willie Peijnenburg has been awarded the status of Emeritus Fellow in Division VI. This 2022 appointment reflects his standing as a scientist and continuing service to our division and to the Union.
Prof. Dr. Peijnenburg is an organic chemist by training with more than 30 years of experience in environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology research. His research focus is on the modelling of the fate and effects of a broad suite of environmental contaminants, ranging from legacy pollutants to novel materials. He is employed as a senior scientist by the Dutch national institute of human health and the environment (RIVM) and has been appointed as professor at the Center for Environmental Sciences of Leiden University (The Netherlands) with a research chair ‘Environmental Toxicology and Biodiversity’. Thereupon he has been appointed as a visiting Professor of Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, China.
Prof. Dr. Peijnenburg served as the secretary of the Water Chemistry Commission for approximately 15 years, and as secretary of the Division for about 10 years. During this period he was actively involved in the organization of workshops and symposia and prepared various contributions to Pure and Applied Chemistry. He brings extensive institutional knowledge of past division activities and projects.
Willie Peijnenburg is an expert in chemical risk assessment and published over 360 papers and about 25 book chapters in this area, including highly cited contributions on risk assessment of nanomaterials, microplastics and endocrine disrupting chemicals, and on predictive ecotoxicology in highly esteemed journal like Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Sustainability. He has participated in various projects within the various European Research Framework, both as a coordinator and as work package leader. In addition, he currently is (associate) editor of 2 scientific journals on environmental fate and effect assessment and editorial board member of 11 journals on environmental hazard and risk assessment.
