Professor Ian M. Mills has been awarded the status of Emeritus Fellow in Division I. This 2020 appointment reflects his standing as a scientist and continuing service to the division and to the Union.
Emeritus Professor Ian M. Mills (Great Britain), born in 1930, was a member of academic staff in Chemistry at the University of Reading between 1957 and 1995, and is now Emeritus Professor of Chemical Spectroscopy. His academic achievements were recognised by his election to a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1996. He was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to Chemistry and Metrology. Professor Mills’ interest in IUPAC and metrology stemmed from his world-class work in high-resolution molecular spectroscopy, his beloved research field.
Professor Mills record of distinguished IUPAC service started in the 1980s. He was chairman of the Commission on Physicochemical Symbols, Terminology and Units (I.1) in 1988 which proposed a new concept and led the publication of the Green Book. He was chairman of the IUPAC Interdivisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols (ICTNS) in 1998-1999. He co-authored the first, second, and third editions of the IUPAC Green Book (Quantities, Units, and Symbols in Physical Chemistry). Professor Mills played a leading role in the IUPAC work leading to the recent Système international d’unités (SI) redefinitions of the mole and kilogram (https://iupac.org/100/stories/the-new-si/). He was President of the Consultative Committee on Units (CCU) of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (the BIPM, Bureau Internationale des Poids et Mesures) until 2013.
