Every year and since 2019 when this project was initiated as one marking IUPAC’s 100th anniversary\, it has sparked a global conversation about how chemistry is evolving\, and it has raised questions such as what is the “next best thing” in chemistry? how do we prepare for it? where is chemistry heading with regards to access to resources\, regulation\, energy\, health\, materials…? \nThis year’s WCLM will attempt to answer some of the aforementioned questions. In planning for this meeting\, leaders in the global chemical community were asked what they perceived as Society’s most pressing problems and what challenges chemistry faces in finding solutions to those problems. The following topics emerged and have been selected for presentation and debate during the coming meeting: \n\nThe digitalization of chemistry (artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, virtual reality\, quantum computers\, robotics)\nThe advanced chemical recycling of plastics\nFeeding the Planet (fertilizers\, ammonia production\, environmental impacts\, etc.)\nNew fuels (the future of energy and the environment)\nPandemic responsiveness (speed of testing\, personalized medicine\, wearable sensors)\nNew methods for drug discovery (programmable chemical syntheses\, spatial genomics – will build on the first bullet point above)\nThe future of chemistry education (how should chemists be prepared for the lab of the future\, for data sharing/management\, for the interdisciplinary nature of scientific research\, etc.?)\n\nThere will be one speaker per topic for a fifteen to twenty minutes presentation\, and time will be allotted at the end for a wrap-up and a question-and-answer session. This meeting will be in-person\, as part of the during the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress in The Hague\, The Netherlands on 23 August 2023. However\, traditional publication models can be inaccessible due to paywalls and expensive publishing fees. Open Access publishing and FAIR (Findability\, Accessibility\, Interoperability\, and Reusability) data guidelines have been widely accepted in the chemical sciences field to increase the availability of research. Unfortunately\, obstacles ranging from finding an equitable approach to determining liability for publishing fees have hindered widespread implementation of these practices. \nJoin the Chemical Sciences Roundtable next week\, on August 1\, 2023\, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm ET\, for a webinar on open access and FAIR data in the chemical sciences. This webinar will provide an overview of open access publishing and FAIR data principles\, as well as discuss challenges and solutions specific to the chemical sciences for equitable implementation.  All members of the public are welcome to register to attend. For more information\, please visit the event webpage. \nLeah McEwen will be presenting on the IUPAC Case Study and WorldFAIR Chemistry project \nREGISTER HERE \nIf you have questions\, please email Kay Wymbs at Kwymbs@nas.edu. \n  \nPhoto by Emil Widlund on Unsplash URL:https://iupac.org/event/open-access-and-fair-data-in-the-chemical-sciences-webinar/ LOCATION:Online\, Virtual CATEGORIES:Webinar ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://iupac.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20230801_openAccess.png GEO:36.3052271;-94.1743021 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Online Virtual;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=Virtual:geo:-94.1743021,36.3052271 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20230730 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20230805 DTSTAMP:20231228T225108 CREATED:20220901T174009Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220901T174406Z UID:22648-1690675200-1691193599@iupac.org SUMMARY:The 26th International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics (ICCT-2023) DESCRIPTION:The 26th International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics (ICCT-2023) will be held in Osaka\, Japan\, from 30 July to 4 August 2023. Originally the conference was to be organized for the 2022 summer after the predecessor in 2020\, London. However\, the worldwide COVID-19 crisis forced canceling the London conference\, and shifting the Osaka conference to 2023. At present\, the organizers plan to have this meeting on-site after five years interval from the last ICCT-2018 (USA). \nThis conference aims to share new research results and discuss their scientific meaning in Chemical Thermodynamics which is a fundamental science that analyzes the properties and chemical changes of materials by applying thermodynamic principles. Understanding materials properties\, reactions\, phase behaviors\, and interaction of materials with environmental features in thermodynamic framework gives important bases for all areas in chemistry\, and they are closely related to applied chemistry and chemical engineering. The results and knowledge of chemical thermodynamics are also used for industries based on material science. In recent years\, research on heat conduction\, thermoelectric effect\, understanding of non-equilibrium in living organisms\, and global warming and energy problems in the environment has made significant progress based on chemical thermodynamics. The 26th ICCT conference covers a wide range of these fields\, such as the construction of fundamental theories\, collection of various data\, application of the data\, establishment of methodologies\, organic and inorganic materials\, polymers\, pharmaceuticals\, foods\, and environmental & safety problems. \nICCT-2023 should serve as an interdisciplinary platform and is open for all aspects of the chemical and physical behaviors of substances by virtue of the very nature of thermodynamics. Exciting presentations and inspired discussions of leading researchers and scholars in the fields of Chemical Thermodynamics will make that conference memorable. \nContacts: \nKazuya Saito (Univ. of Tsukuba) – kazuya@chem.tsukuba.ac.jp\nDepartment of Chemistry\, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences\, University of Tsukuba\nTennodai 1-1-1\, Tsukuba\, Ibaraki 305-8571\, JAPAN \nYasuhiro Nakazawa (Osaka Univ.) – nakazawa@chem.sci.osaka-u.ac.jp\nDepartment of Chemistry\, Graduate School of Science\, Osaka University\nMachikaneyama 1-1\, Toyonaka\, Osaka\, 560-0043\, JAPAN \nPhoto by Nomadic Julien on Unsplash URL:https://iupac.org/event/icct-2023/ LOCATION:Osaka Senri Life-Science Center\, Toyonaka city\, Osaka\, Japan CATEGORIES:International Conference ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://iupac.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/ICCT2023_nomadic-julien-zDRO6ztMAHA-unsplash.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20230728 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20230731 DTSTAMP:20231228T225108 CREATED:20230329T084401Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230329T084401Z UID:23967-1690502400-1690761599@iupac.org SUMMARY:Young Ambassadors for Chemistry at 9NICE 2023 DESCRIPTION:A Young Ambassadors for Chemistry (YAC) program is being organized in Kuching\, in association with the 9th International Conference on Network for Inter-Asian Chemistry Educators (NICE 2023) \nSee relevant CCE project 2023-003-3-050\, coordinated by Zuriati Zakaria URL:https://iupac.org/event/young-ambassadors-for-chemistry-at-9nice-2023/ CATEGORIES:Workshop ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://iupac.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/yacsticker.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20230725 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20230728 DTSTAMP:20231228T225108 CREATED:20230522T070709Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230727T135844Z UID:24084-1690243200-1690502399@iupac.org SUMMARY:Virtual General Assembly 2023 - schedule DESCRIPTION:Content is protected.
