IUPAC100 Periodic Table Challenge

#periodictablechallenge

IUPAC100 Periodic Table Challenge is an online multiple choice test. The test consists of 15 questions randomly drawn from the question database. Each question contains four multiple choice answers with a single correct answer. Each question is about a chemical element. Everyone can participate – whether you are at high-school or university.

All participants are encouraged to play the test as many times as they wish and they are not expected to know the answers without consulting other sources such as the classmates or the internet in general. In fact, we encourage you to play as many times as you can because each time you will get different questions! The email address you provide will keep track of your progress.

This Challenge and its components are offered for informational purposes only; IUPAC shall not be responsible or liable for the accuracy, usefulness or availability of any information transmitted or made available via the site, and shall not be responsible or liable for any error or omissions in that information.

Finishing the Challenge

There is no time limit on the questions and upon answering all 15 questions we will ask basic information about you – your email, name (or the name of your School in case you are playing as a team), city, and country.
It is important to provide this information (and complete this process by clicking ‘Send’) to us. Your Challenge will not be entered into our system unless you complete this step. If you score at least 60 % (at least 9 correct answers), you will receive a certificate from IUPAC which will be available from this site (‘Check your score’).

Playing as Schools or Organizations

Schools, Institutions, or Organizations may wish to participate in the Periodic Table challenge and have a way to find out who, among its members, has achieved the highest scores. There are several ways this can be achieved.
(1) by email: if all participants provide institutional email when they participate in the PT Challenge, we can determine rankings among the participants. Please have your administrator contact us at [email protected] for details.
(2) by unique acronym: if all participants provide a unique identifier next to the City when they participate in the PT Challenge, we can determine rankings among the participants. For example, a code ‘M6’ can be used to identify participants from a certain activity as follows: ‘Philadelphia (M6)’. Please have your administrator contact us at [email protected] for details.

The Certificate

The information (name and city) you provide upon finishing the Challenge will appear on the Certificate, if you score 60 % or above. If you are not happy with the name (or the school name) you provided after taking the test and wish to receive another ‘good’ certificate, you will have to take another test with a different email address.

Leaderboard and world map

Leaderboard shows the total cumulative score from all players divided by the avatar elements. Each correct answer gives one point. Upon the completion of the Challenge, users are also able to see the correct answers and their overall score. Submissions of the IUPAC Periodic Table Challenge show on the world map based on the geolocation of the internet provider addresses of the users.

Technical issues

Please be patient, sometimes it might take a while for the world map or leaderboard to reflect your achievement. Also, be sure to use the same email you provided at the end of the Challenge when checking your score! If you want your browser to forget your activity, please clear the cache of your browser. This might be useful when you try playing with a different email on the same device. In general, if you are experiencing difficulties please try different device or internet browser. If all else fails, you can contact us at [email protected].

IUPAC100 Nobelium Contest

#nobeliumcontest

In the Nobelium contest we ask you to celebrate the Periodic Table. The entries of this contest should highlight the role of the Periodic Table in a creative manner. Due to the creative nature of this contest, the types of submissions can be varied. As an example, you can make an educational video about an element, you can write a story (fiction or otherwise), you can write a haiku or a poem, make a song or a painting. Entries can also highlight your outreach or community service in chemistry or chemistry education. The choice is entirely yours!

In order to submit an entry to the Nobelium Contest you must first play the IUPAC Periodic Table Challenge and obtain a minimum of 60 % score. The email address you provide will keep track of your progress. Before submitting your entry, you might be asked to provide your email address to verify the eligibility. In case of difficulties at this stage, please clear the cache of your browser.

By submitting an entry to the IUPAC100 Nobelium Contest, you agree that your contribution will be publicly displayed on this site along with your name as it appears on the Certificate. By uploading any material you warrant that any material does not infringe any third party’s Intellectual Property. All material has to be original and we will not post content that is appropriated from other sources without written consent from the original creators.

All entries will be open to a popular vote. Everyone will be able to express their ‘like’ for a particular submission (by clicking the heart symbol). Those, who have successfully completed the IUPAC100 Periodic Table Challenge will be able to vote for entries (by clicking the start symbol). Your email will be used as a means to authenticate your eligibility to vote for an entry. All eligible entries will be judged by the IUPAC panel of experts based on these three broad categories: creativity, commitment, and impact (votes received). The winners of the Nobelium contest will be announced by IUPAC throughout the year in four stages (spring, summer, fall, and winter) and will be eligible to receive a unique limited-edition Periodic Table poster autographed by a chemistry Nobel laureate!

Any entries which are incomplete or incomprehensible may be voided at our discretion. IUPAC will not be liable to reimburse expenses incurred in making an entry. IUPAC100 Nobelium Contest winners will be notified of the competition result by email and on our website or social media channels. Competition entries shall be judged or winners selected on the basis of those criteria specified above by the Jury consisting of the members of the IUPAC Project 2017-031-1-050. Our decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Reasonable efforts will be made to contact the prize winners but if the winner fails to respond to our notification attempts within a week or provide an address for delivery of the prize or fails to meet any of the eligibility requirements or is otherwise unable to comply with the competition terms and conditions, we reserve the right to disqualify that entrant and offer the prize to the next eligible entrant and thereafter until a winner is found.
